Bill grew up in Southern California, spending summers as a teenager backpacking with friends on the JMT. He landed his dream job in Yosemite National Park, where he worked for seven years as a backcountry ranger and horse patrol ranger in summer and a Nordic ski patrol ranger in the winter. He was also on the SAR team and did some climbing after working on several big wall rescues. Bill and his wife moved to Portland in 1985, where he began a 30-year teaching career. He enjoys hiking, backpacking, and biking, but his real love is cross-country skiing, especially annual trips to Methow Valley. In fact, he often trains on roller skis during the off season. His philosophy of skiing is like Shakespeare: it’s good for everybody - no exceptions. Bill loves sharing this enthusiasm with the good people at the Mountain Shop.
